Yazoo High-Alc Beer: What would you like to see?


We think that we will soon be able to brew and sell beers above the 6% abv level for the first time in Tennessee, and we'd like to throw the question out to all of our loyal Yazooligans:


If it were your choice, what style of "high-alc" beer would you like to see us brew? Some ideas - a double IPA; a barleywine; a Trappist-style Belgian ale; an imperial oatmeal stout; a weizenbock; and the list could go on.


Leave us a comment below on what you would love to see, once we branch out into the higher-alcohol territory. Of course, we have our own ideas and recipes we've had waiting in the wings, but we would love your feedback. And no, the laws are not about to change - high alcohol beers will still be sold as liquor in TN.

    Dopplebocks and Barleywines are my favorite high-alc styles, so I'd love to see both of those. Given what I've had from Yazoo in the past, I think you guys could do a killer Barleywine.

    I'm with Eric. There are not enough options for Barleywine in Nashville. I think Yazoo could do well to fill this void.

    Belgian Farm House, Belgian Triple or Barley Wine. Yazoo!

    What makes you guys think you'll be brewing this soon? Any pertinent laws going to change?...

    ...or I guess an obvious one is to let the Hop Project turn into a double IPA. Kick Ace! Delicious!

    I was under the impression that "Trappist" beers can still refer to a broad style of brews. Is there a more specific style you all were considering? I ask because I think the long-endured novelty behind these beers would make it a hit.

    In a close second would be the weizenbock simply because I am a fan of all wheat beers.

    I'd love a Strong Ale, English style. I'm thinking similar to the type many brewers only make in late-fall/winter.

    If you've had it, I'm thinking similar to the Great Divide Hibernation Ale.

    mmmmm I just know Yazoo's take on that would make a very tasty beer!

    I would like to see an Imperial Amber Ale. Take one of the Hop Projects to the next level. Similar to Nugget Nectar:

    I vote for an Imperial Pilsner. A big blast of hops and crispness to welcome in the warmer weather that awaits.

    If the green light for over 6.3% is a go, I say it's time to give cask conditioning a try! Throw a little high ABV Dos in a an oak bbl and out pops DOS CUJOS!

    Or simply you can't go wrong brewing a Triple Imperial IPA!

    I would love to see your take on a dIPA and/or an imperial stout. Is there a law that is being changed to allow this?

    A dIPA would fit the bill perfect....the conditioning time is pretty quick (comparatively) and It's a good high gravity beer to get your feet wet with.

    Weizenbock
    Dunkelweizen
    a Tappist
    Triple Bock
    Double IPA
    a strong Stout

    In order of preference:

    Double IPA
    Barleywine (very close second)
    Weizenbock
    Wheat Wine
    Imperial Stout (if you barrel age it, move it up)
    Belgian Quad

    Double IPA. My wife suggests Belgian Trippel. But an Imperial Pilsner couldn't be wrong either.

    i think an ipa would be hit or miss, only certain people tend to like ipas. i think any of the others sound fantastic.
